1.  How do you define art?
Art is an idea or emotion given expression that is created by an individual or individuals.
2.  What does it mean to you to be creative?  What are the benefits.
Some people are good at writing computer programs – and they enjoy it.  Some people play video games.  Unlike doing a math problem where there is a predictable right answer, artistic creation can have infinite “answers”.  I like to surprise myself and work in the moment.
I use my mind in a problem solving way to give expression to ideas in an unique and distinct way by utilizing ideas and expressing them in an unknown problem.
3.  Why do you create art?  (mental process, material process, habits and preparation)
After an idea comes to me, sometimes in my sleep or idea I already have, I think about it for a while.  This process can take anywhere from a few hours to a few months and sometimes longer.  I find that sometimes the ideas that I think about for the shortest time are what I consider my best ones.
Material process – I like to accumulate my selection of materials and have all items needed before I begin a collage or sculpture.  I like to used recyled paint if possible, found objects from thrift stores, junkyards and garage sales.
Habits and Preparation – I like to have all my materials prior to starting the project.  Once I start a project – I will work on it continuously until it is completed.
4.  What is the nature or natures of art?  Can it be defined?

By nature, art is forever changing and evolving.  That is how I would define it.
5.  What is the function of art to you personally and what do you feel it is to society?

To me personally - art needs to convey a message or emotion.  It is a personal attraction that sometimes defies explanation.
In society - each person or group has their own unique connection to art.  The abstract expressionism group had a unique vision that provided them with a particular direction.  Art is a reflection of society and should act as a check and balance.  Art is a watch dog.
6.  How is art related to culture?
Art is a reflection of culture.  If you want to study history – study art.  .
7.  How can society better appreciate art?   If you could implement some public outreach involving the arts what would it be?

Society can better appreciate art if it integrated into daily lives.
Public outreach – I think museums and cultural centers should be where we vote – not in church basements of schools.  Expose people who ordinarily are not exposed.  Art belongs to all people.  History books should incorporate Art History.  Students who have taken an Art History class definitely have more of appreciate of art.  More public art in office buildings and public spaces.
8.  What artists-styles-idea-artworks have motivated or impacted you?
Motherwell for his freedom with painting
Picasso for passion
Schnabel & Rauschenberg for there use of mixed media
Basquiat for his use of words.
I would also like to add..art is a business and you have to be a good politician....
